TOM RAMSHAW SAILING

Summary

In early 2015 I began a branding campaign for Olympic sailing hopeful Tom Ramshaw. I was tasked with creating a brand and bio for him, to seek sponsors for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics. The bio that I created for him was eventually used to land him sponsorships from Helly Hansen and Canadian Tire. For a period I also managed his social media and website presences and created a template for the platform to ensure success in the future. 

Tom is now a part of Team Canada and has already qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and has won the prestigious Rolex Sailor of the Year award. 

 

Social Media Presence and Bio

Managing Tom’s social media was challenging as he travelled a lot, but I was able to follow him to the gym and create templates for his media usage that he still uses today. He attributed his increase in social media and the bio I created for him as one of the main reasons for his success in landing a sponsorship and subsequently being able to train for the Rio Olympics with top notch equipment.

Logo & Bio

I worked on condensing Tom’s Life story and sailing career into a bio and logo to represent him and his switch to the Finn class of boat from his prior Laser class. This switch would ultimately be the defining factor as this is the boat in which he qualified for the Rio olympics.

What I Learned

Over the course of this project, I learned more about professional sailing and requirements for olympic athletes, as well as what it takes to secure sponsorship. The story of how an athlete qualifies is as important as their drive to win. This was also my first opportunity to work with Social Media and I quickly found that there was a timing element as well as a volume of content needed to maintain interest. I would later learn about Hootsuite and would try this with his social media management with great success.
